The Magic "rug" that made Reload for Novell GroupWise go a Lot Faster

1. Apply patches from Novell to the Reload Server

[ The Problem ]

Recently a customer in Chile was implementing Reload, the GroupWise Backup Solution. They were putting Reload through the paces backing up a GroupWise post office on NetWare, and then migrating it to a Linux server. The migration was taking way too long, several hours, and it was only a 60 gigabyte post office.

[ The Solution ]

Then the customer used "rug" (the command-line interface to ZENWorks Linux Management) to upgrade both of the OES servers (the Reload server and the destination Linux server) to the latest support pack and that was the trick. Things really took off then. Reload migrated the GroupWise post office from the Reload server to the Linux server in 2 hours. Pretty slick!

1.Add additional GRE_BLOBS-Threads, up to 10 threads

2.NetWare customers consider enabling the NetWare NFS server, and modify the Reload profile to backup the GroupWise post office as if it is on a Linux server.

[ Increasing GRE_BLOBS-Threads for Backing up the OFFILES Directories ]

Because of a unique threading technology, Reload is the fastest backup solution available for GroupWise. How fast? you ask. Well for example; at the State of Utah, there is a GroupWise post office with 1,100 users on a 70 Gigabyte post office on a Linux server. Their nightly Reload backup times are just under 13 minutes. And remember, that because of Reload's unique architecture, each Reload Standard (Incremental) backup is effectively a Full Backup, which only takes about 12% of the size of the post office on disk.

Some notes on Migrating GWAVA 3 to GWAVA 4

Now that you're ready to move to GWAVA 4, one of the most common questions that comes up is "how do I migrate my GWAVA 3 configuration?".

That's a great question and we even have a wizard built in to GWAVA 4 for this.

After the discussion, you will see why we generally recommend the you start up a new configuration rather than importing an old one.

Let's think about this for a moment and see what exactly we DO have in the GWAVA 3 configuration that we would want to migrate.

1) spam configuration. You've spent a lot of time, perhaps, in optimizing your antispam engine. There are two points about this.

How to use GWAVA 4/Linux with your NetWare based GroupWise system.

While GWAVA 4 on NetWare is still on beta, some clients would like to take advantage of the tremendous power of GWAVA 4 today.

GWAVA 4 is available NOW for Linux and as a GWAVA customer, you're entitled to it if your maintenance is up to date.

This is also a great way to simply test drive GWAVA 4.

We will be taking advantage of GWAVA 4's new GWIA scanning ability to do this. Scanning at the GWIA has a lot of advantages for Internet mail. For scanning between post offices, you will still need to use GWAVA's traditional MTA interface.

So let's begin.

Start by setting up a Linux box. It doesn't have to be anything special. I would recommend using SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10. (SLES 10). It's easy to set up and very reliable.

MySQL plans IPO

Submitted by Travis Doherty on April 26, 2007 - 12:35pm.

MySQL, the world's most popular open source database server, has hit $50 Million in revenue for 2006. That compares to $6.5 Million in 2002 [1]. This comes from monetizing a product that has a parallel open source version for no cash down, and really goes to show that selling support and services does work as a business model. I'm very happy to hear these results.

The MySQL server is an enterprise level database solution and the company MySQL AB has brought enterprise level support and service to the offering.

MySQL is a database server that works well with PHP and the two products are commonly used together, PHP is installed on over 20 Million domains [2]. Gwava's new product Retain will enter beta using a MySQL backend, and will expand to other backends in later releases.
